Bike Angels 101
Does moving bikes help fellow riders?
Yes! Each bike a Bike Angel moves typically helps at least one fellow rider by freeing up a dock or supplying a bike. Often, this rider in turn enables another trip, and the Bike Angel's efforts continue to be paid forward!
How do I earn points?
You earn Bike Angel points depending on the pair of stations involved in your Citi Bike trips. See below for examples of how Pick Up and Drop Off points work and check out the current station scores at the Bike Angels web map!
Start at neutral station, bike to 1-point Drop Off
Start at 2-point Pick Up station, bike to neutral station
Start at 2-point Pick Up station, bike to 1-point Drop Off
Trips with Drop Off points at trip start will not earn points
Same thing with Pick Up points at the end of a trip
Do points carry over month to month?
Bike Angels earn monthly, annual, and lifetime points. Monthly points "reset" whenever the calendar flips a page, and these are the points that earn membership extensions and day passes. Annual points are based on the "riding season" beggining April 1st and running through the subsequent March 31st. Lifetime points last forever. Annual points and lifetime points earn "Bike Angel Status Rewards" such as the white key and Bike Angels pin, as well as future rewards to be introduced.
I took a trip that should've earned points but I didn't receive the points. Help?
The most common reason points aren't earned when expected is because the trip started at a Drop Off station or ended at a Pick Up station. Those trips don't earn points because they're less likely to balance the system and help a fellow rider!
How can I check my total Bike Angel points online?
The Check Your Points button of course. Also, as soon as you dock, you'll be sent a push notification on your phone with the total points for that trip along with your monthly and annual total. Last but not least, if you have your docking notification emails turned on within your member profile, you'll receive a "trip receipt" in your inbox with details of the trip (including Bike Angel points) each time you dock.
Is there a limit to the points I can earn in a month?
Nope. We've seen Bike Angels rack up thousands of points in a month (yes, thousands); the more the merrier!
Which stations can earn points?
All stations have the ability to earn points depending on the demand for bikes and docks. Often times, there's a station only one or two blocks away from your destination that can earn points with only a slight adjustment to your route.
How do I redeem my points for rewards?
Points don't need to be redeemed; rewards are automatically awarded if you've crossed the respective point threshold for a reward.
When are rewards distributed?
Most of the rewards such as a day pass and membership extension will be sent automatically when the point threshold is reached. We distribute all other rewards to Bike Angels in the first week of the following month, but we're working to get them to you even faster :)
How does a membership extension work if I pay monthly?
Your payment plan won't change, but your expiration date will scoot back by one (or more!) weeks. As a result, you'll still make 12 monthly payments but your membership may last longer than a year.
What do I do with a Day Pass if I already have an annual membership?
Share the pass (and the joy of biking) with a friend, a family member, or a guest visiting the city!
How do I turn on the Bike Angels scores in the Citi Bike app?
For both Android and iOS, the steps are the same: download the newest version of the Citi Bike App, log into your account, and activate Bike Angels in Map Settings!
Can I earn points at Jersey City stations?
Points can be earned at Jersey City stations as well as in NYC, and the points earned on either side of the river will contribute to the same monthly and annual totals. However, as a friendly reminder, trips that start in Jersey City and end in New York (or vice versa) are against the terms of the rental agreement. As such, these trips will not earn Bike Angel points.
